Asylum
VRA is one of the primary organizations in Vermont offering advocacy and legal services to those individuals in need of protection from persecution in their home country through applying for asylum here in the U.S.
To be granted asylum, individuals must prove that they have been persecuted and/or have a well-founded fear of future persecution if they were to return to their home country. This fear must be on account of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or their political opinion.
VRA staff interviews the individual and if the case is accepted then together, VRA and their client-partner decide how best to work with the case. Sometimes, VRA represents the individual, and other times VRA refers the case to an attorney best suited to represent the case.
